(PHILADELPHIA, PA, 11/19/24) — The Philadelphia and Pittsburgh chapters of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Philadelphia and CAIR-Pittsburgh) strongly condemn Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman’s dismissal of Pope Francis’ call for an investigation into whether Israel’s military actions in Gaza constitute genocide.
In a forthcoming book, “Hope Never Disappoints. Pilgrims Towards a Better World,” Pope Francis stated: “According to some experts, what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide. We should investigate carefully to determine whether it fits into the technical definition formulated by jurists and international bodies.”
Over the weekend, CAIR’s national office welcomed the call by Pope Francis for an investigation to determine whether Israel has committed “genocide” in Gaza.
Senator Fetterman responded to the call for accountability, stating, “I reject the accusation and investigation in the strongest terms.”
In a statement, CAIR-Pittsburgh Executive Director Christine Mohamed said: “It is deeply troubling that Senator Fetterman continues to prioritize his personal opinions over the voices and concerns of his constituents. His repeated gaslighting of those he represents must stop. It’s time to put facts over feelings and demand transparency about the PAC money influencing his positions. The fact remains that the Israeli government’s actions meet the criteria for genocide, and the world must hold them accountable.”
In a statement, CAIR-Philadelphia Executive Director Ahmet Tekelioglu said: “After condoning indiscriminate killing of civilians with his support for Israel’s pager attacks, this criticism of Pope Francis’ call for an investigation of genocide is a new low for Senator Fetterman. It is concerning that a Pennsylvania politician can be so out of touch with realities on the ground and contribute to the dehumanization of Palestinians and Lebanese who are suffering daily atrocities.”
Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly condemned Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
CAIR continues to advocate for human rights and justice, calling for a transparent investigation into the ongoing atrocities in Gaza to ensure accountability and dignity for all victims.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
