CAIR-PA Encourages Community Support for Coalition Letter Opposing “Stand With Israel Act”

(HARRISBURG, PA, 6/25/2024) – The Pennsylvania Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-PA) today urged Pennsylvania residents to contact their state representatives to express opposition to proposed legislation SB1260 (“Stand with Israel Act”), which is aimed at prohibiting boycotts and divestments from the State of Israel.

Community members are invited to add their support to a coalition letter opposing the legislation, co-signed by nearly 70 statewide organizations, which states, in part:

“At a time when international bodies including the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, and the UN General Assembly have alerted the international community about Israel committing a plausible genocide and crimes against the Gazan population, this step at the Pennsylvania General Assembly would be a wrong step of historic magnitude.

“By seeking to stifle efforts to hold accountable those responsible for such violations, this proposed legislation would infringe upon the rights of individuals and organizations to engage in peaceful protest and exercise their freedom of speech. It is essential to uphold these fundamental rights, which are the cornerstone of our democracy.”

Supporters are urged to ask their Pennsylvania lawmakers to reconsider any support for the proposed legislation and to instead promote policies that uphold democratic values, foster dialogue, and respect the rights of individuals and institutions to express their views freely.
