CAIR-Philadelphia Welcomes Arrest in Islamic Center Arson Probe, Thanks Community Member Whose Tip to CAIR Helped Lead to Charges

(PHILADELPHIA, PA, 7/17/2026) — The Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Philadelphia), a chapter for the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the arrest and federal charges filed against a suspect in the July 5 arson attack targeting the Northeast Philadelphia Islamic Center.

Federal investigators allege that the suspect intentionally targeted the mosque, held anti-Muslim and racist views, and had previously discussed using fire to damage mosques. According to court documents, investigators were able to identify the suspect in part because of information provided by a community member whose tip proved instrumental in advancing the investigation.

CAIR-Philadelphia thanked the community member for contacting CAIR with a concern and the swift follow up from law enforcement agencies after CAIR-Philadelphia’s alert to this tip.

CAIR-Philadelphia also commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Philadelphia Police Department, and all law enforcement agencies involved in conducting a thorough investigation that led to today’s charges.

“We welcome the arrest and charges announced today and are grateful that the alleged arsonist has been taken off our streets,” said Dr. Ahmet Tekelioglu, Executive Director of CAIR-Philadelphia. “We are especially thankful to the community member who contacted our office with information that helped investigators identify the suspect. This case is a powerful reminder that protecting our communities is a shared responsibility, and that courageous individuals who speak up can make all the difference.

“We also thank the many faith leaders, elected officials, neighbors, and community members who stood with the Northeast Philadelphia Islamic Center in the days following the attack. Their solidarity sent a clear message that hate has no place in Philadelphia.”

Following the attack, CAIR-Philadelphia announced a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible, later matched by City Commissioner Omar Sabir while the ATF also offered a reward as investigators sought public assistance.

While today’s arrest marks a significant milestone, CAIR-Philadelphia emphasized that the broader challenge of anti-Muslim hate remains.

“This attack did not occur in a vacuum,” Tekelioglu added. “The alleged motive outlined in the charging documents reflects the dangerous consequences of anti-Muslim bigotry and dehumanizing rhetoric. We remain committed to working with our partners to ensure that every member of our community can worship freely and safely without fear of intimidation or violence.”

He said CAIR-Philadelphia will continue to monitor the legal proceedings and stands ready to support the Northeast Philadelphia Islamic Center and its congregation throughout the process.

CAIR offers a “Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety” booklet, which offers advice on how to help keep religious facilities safe. The advice in the booklet is applicable to houses of worship of all faiths.

Washington, D.C. based CAIR’s latest civil rights report documented 8,683 anti-Muslim bias complaints in 2025 – the highest number ever recorded by the organization since it began publishing civil rights reports in 1996.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
