(PHILADELPHIA, PA, 8/10/2026) — The Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Philadelphia) today criticized Haverford College’s decision to resolve litigation that improperly conflates criticism of Zionism with antisemitism and risks undermining academic freedom and the rights of students advocating for Palestinian freedom.
“Haverford College has made a serious mistake by treating support for Zionism as though it were inherently synonymous with Jewish identity, and by indicating that criticism of Zionism could therefore constitute illegal discrimination,” said Dr. Ahmet Tekelioglu, Executive Director of CAIR-Philadelphia. “Jewish students deserve protection from antisemitism, harassment, and discrimination. Palestinian students deserve those same protections. But no political ideology should be placed beyond criticism at an institution whose mission is supposed to center intellectual inquiry and the pursuit of truth.”
He noted that Washington, D.C.-based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
Tekelioglu added,
“While Haverford appropriately affirms that Jewish students must be protected from discrimination and harassment, the College goes further by explicitly identifying support for Zionism as a stance that faculty and students may not criticize or oppose.
“Protecting Jewish people is not the same as protecting Zionism from criticism. A student’s Jewish identity is not a political ideology, and criticism of Zionism or advocacy for Palestinian rights should not be presumed to constitute hostility toward Jewish people. Universities must protect people from discrimination while preserving the right to debate political ideologies, government policies, and competing visions for the future of Palestine and Israel.
“Haverford’s response creates a troubling precedent for academic freedom. If opposing or criticizing Zionism can be characterized as discrimination against students who support Zionism, then legitimate political debate becomes vulnerable to institutional censorship. That is not a standard a liberal arts college should embrace.
“There cannot be one standard for protecting one community and another standard for protecting another.
“Haverford may ultimately regret choosing a path that threatens free speech by placing a political ideology under the umbrella of identity-based protection. As Dr. King noted, the arc of the moral universe bends toward justice. Institutions of higher education should consider not only the pressures of the present moment, but how their choices will be judged by future generations.
“History will judge institutions of higher education by whether they had the courage to stand for universal principles when doing so was difficult. An exclusivist project pursued at the expense of Palestinian freedom is not what will bring justice to the Middle East. Palestinian freedom is not a threat to Jewish dignity, Palestinian self-determination is not incompatible with Jewish safety, and criticism of Zionism is not synonymous with hatred of the Jewish community.”
CAIR-Philadelphia said that Haverford’s settlement could have a chilling effect on students and faculty who advocate for Palestinian human rights, and that the College should instead reaffirm a straightforward principle: people are entitled to protection from discrimination; political ideologies are entitled to scrutiny.
CAIR-Philadelphia calls on Haverford College to reaffirm its commitment to academic freedom, viewpoint diversity, and equal protection for all members of its community.
