During the month-long fast of Ramadan, Muslims around the world pray a voluntary night prayer called Taraweeh (ta-ra-wee-ah). The Taraweeh prayer can consist of up to eight or more prostrations, a prescribed series of movements and supplications performed by Muslims during their prayers.
The prayer will be led by the famed Somali-American Qur’an reciter Ahmed Burhan.
CAIR-Philadelphia seeks to provide a unified platform for Muslims across the city to gather and pray together, fostering a sense of community and solidarity.
In a statement, CAIR-Philadelphia Youth Leadership and Advocacy Project Coordinator Asiyah Jones said:
“Amidst Philadelphia’s ongoing challenges, including the widespread gun violence that claimed 400 lives and injured over 1,200 in the past year, it is imperative for the Philadelphia Muslim community to unite in denouncing violence while fervently praying for peace, both locally and globally- most prominently in Gaza. Our united stance will be a call to our local elected officials to stand for peace and humanity at home and abroad.”
The March 29 event is co-sponsored by CAIR- Philadelphia, Muslim City Fest, The Philadelphia Masjid, Center City Mosque, Muslim Aid Initiative, Philadelphia Palestinian Americans, Philly Muslim Initiatives, MDF Enterprise, Masjid Mujahideen, United Muslim Masjid, The Traveling Muslimah’s, Philly Halal Food Festival, And Philadelphia Arabs.
