CAIR-Philadelphia continues its efforts to educate Muslim young people in the Philadelphia region, through our Muslim Youth Leadership Program (MYLP), about how to deal with verbal and physical bullying, and how to respond to bigoted attacks on Islam, The Prophet (pbuh), and the Muslim community. These indispensable workshops provide the next generation of our community with the tools they so urgently need as they deal with the tensions of living an Islamic life in contemporary America. To date, hundreds of young people have been reached by our MYLPs.

School bullying is on the rise. According to 2010 survey conducted by Muslim Mothers Against Violence, a Washington based advocacy group, all 57 Muslim respondents between the ages of 11 to 18 reported being called a name because of their faith, including 80% who said they have been called “terrorist.”
Bullying can have devastating results on a student’s self-esteem and academic performance.
The Muslim Youth Leadership Programs are designed for youth 10 to 15 years of age, and focuses on building a positive American Muslim identity, and how to identify and report school bullying and harassment. The workshop also instructs students about their religious rights in school and how to answer tough questions about Muslims and Islam.
Results from CAIR’s workshop:
- Students will gain confidence to file complaints about bullying
- Students will learn how to recognize bullying in the early stages
- Parents can go away understanding the severity of bullying and cyber bullying
- Students can feel good about themselves when they overcome bullying and have a positive self-esteem and can improve their academic performance.
