CAIR-Philadelphia continued its vital work of providing Muslim Americans — both adults and children — in the Delaware Valley Muslim community with the skills necessary to respond to workplace or school harassment and/or discrimination, and official government intimidation or surveillance.
This past Sunday, May 4th, CAIR-Philadelphia held another in its series of Muslim Youth Leadership Programs (MYLP), addressing and combating the ongoing crisis of Muslim students facing bullying in our schools. Masjid Al-Madinah in Upper Darby, PA hosted the event, drawing over 30 young Muslims ages 10 to 15. Topics discussed included: student rights in school, how to deal with cyber-bullying, and techniques to empower oneself. The extensive questions from students that followed the event show the need and relevance of the program.
On Monday, May 5th, CAIR-Philadelphia held an Anti-Bullying workshop at the Tarbiyah Islamic School in Newark, DE, led by Staff Attorney Ryan Tack-Hooper. The workshop was part of a comprehensive week at Tarbiyah, proactively addressing this important issue. Over 40 students from 1st grade to 5th grade attended, listened and participated in activities designed to help students recognize bullying, its potential legal and emotional consequences, and how self-confidence can be an effective tool in responding non-violently to these challenges.
