One of the services CAIR offers is an anti-bullying workshop for parents and other adults interested in learning about anti-bullying techniques and the rights of students. The duration of the workshop is approximately one hour. We are reaching out to ask if you are interested in CAIR conducting this workshop at your masjid.
School bullying is on the rise. According to 2010 survey conducted by Muslim Mothers Against Violence, a Washington-based advocacy group, all 57 Muslim respondents between the ages of 11 to 18 reported being called a name because of their faith, including 80% who said they have been called “terrorist.” School bullying is one of the complaints CAIR-Philadelphia sees most frequently.
Bullying can have devastating results on a student’s self-esteem and academic performance. CAIR’s workshop focuses on educating the public on the rights of students, how to identify and report school bullying and harassment, and how to build a positive American Muslim identity.
In CAIR’s adult version of the workshop, parents and other guardians learn:
- What legal rights do children have in schools
- What to tell children about how to respond to bullying, including cyberbullying
- What to do when a child tells them about bullying
- Why to take bullying seriously and reasons to avoid the “kids will be kids” mentality
- How to encourage children to empower and educate themselves
