CAIR-Philadelphia ‘Shocked and Concerned’ by Shooting at Philadelphia Mosque’s Parking Lot, Urges Swift Response from Authorities

(PHILADELPHIA, PA, 7/30/24) – The Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Philadelphia) tonight expressed shock and concern about a shooting death in the parking lot of a local mosque and called for swift action by law enforcement authorities.

According to media stories and the police, a gunman approached another male walking toward the mosque and fired at him close range multiple times. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

In a statement, CAIR-Philadelphia Executive Director Ahmet Tekelioglu said:

“We are shocked and concerned by this tragic incident. Al-Aqsa Islamic Society mosque has a beautiful and dedicated community with a long history at its location in Kensington.

“Whether this tragic shooting is related to the gun violence epidemic in our city or another reason, we call on our local leaders and interfaith groups to stand together to offer their support to the Al-Aqsa community. As the investigation continues, we urge Philadelphia Police and the mayor’s office to update the community swiftly and ensure every angle is meticulously explored.”
