A GOOD COUNTRY Virtual Book Launch

CAIR-Philadelphia is pleased to co-sponsor the launch event recognizing the publication of a powerful new book of its founding Board members. A Good Country by attorney and author Sofia Ali-Khan is weaved by stories from across Pennsylvania. We are pleased to join our partners in this event, the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship at Haverford College, Hurford Center for Arts and Humanities at Haverford College, the Interfaith Center of Swarthmore College, and the American Friends Service Committee. Join this Zoom call on July 6 at 7:30pm!

Sofia Ali-Khan’s parents emigrated from Pakistan to America, believing it would be a good country. By the time she had children of her own—having lived, worked, and worshipped in twelve different towns across the nation—Ali-Khan felt deeply American, maybe even a little extra American for having seen so much of the country.

But in the wake of 9/11, and on the cusp of the 2016 election, Ali-Khan’s dream of a good life felt under constant threat. As the vitriolic attacks on Islam and Muslims intensified, she wondered if the American dream had ever applied to families like her own, and if she had gravely misunderstood her home.

Join Random House and Sofia Ali-Khan on Wednesday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m. ET on Zoom to launch Ali-Khan’s book, A Good Country. Equal parts memoir, history, and current events, A Good Country excavates the history of forced migration in the 12 American towns the author and social justice advocate has called home—revealing how White supremacy has fundamentally shaped the nation.

In conversation with Philadelphia journalist and Rutgers professor David A. Love, Ali-Khan will discuss her work—and why she ultimately chose to leave the United States.

This stirring virtual discussion is free to attend.

We can’t wait to see you there.
