Council on American-Islamic Relations, Pittsburgh Chapter (CAIR Pittsburgh) and the Muslim Student Association, University of Pittsburgh (MSA PITT), will co-sponsor a one-day Civic Engagement Workshop. The course is open to people of all faiths.

Time: 9:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M
The trainer will be – Jihad F. Saleh, MPA ’06, Chairman Emeritus, Black Graduate Caucus, Princeton University. Saleh was a congressional legislative advisor for four years. His policy coverage focused on education. Along with his policy duties, Saleh was the program & outreach coordinator for the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association. Currently he is the government affairs representative for Islamic Relief USA.
This training is motivated by a desire to improve leadership skills and to enhance the involvement of Pittsburgh community in social justice activities (local and/or national levels).
At the end of the training, the attendees are expected to:
a. Understand the structure and branches of the local and national government
b. Be able to identify government bodies/officials that might be interested in a project
c. Know how to communicate ideas and to present cases/requests to public officials
d. Learn potential career path in social justice areas
e. Come up with a specific meeting plan and plan of a social activity
“The training is expected to enhance the involvement of Pittsburgh Muslim community in social justice activities (local and/or national levels) through collaboration with the government bodies and other social organizations,” said Azmat Qayyum, president of CAIR Pittsburgh chapter. He also added, “Now is the right time, when we should be engaged in civic matters, more than ever before. It is the need of the hour.” Louis Al-Hashimi, president of MSA Pitt said, “There is an enthusiasm in our youth today to learn the tools of civic engagement, and they are looking for guidance. This training will provide those tools.”
