(PITTSBURGH, PA \u2013 11\/11\/2020)<\/strong> \u2013<\/span><\/span> <\/span>The\u00a0Pittsburgh<\/span>\u00a0chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Pittsburgh<\/span>), the nation\u2019s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today shared the NAACP\u2019s concerns about the use of a Confederate\u00a0flag on display during a local celebration in Charleroi.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

During Charleroi’s virtual\u00a0Community Days Celebration, a Confederate flag was visible on stage as a band performed inside the municipal building, last month.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

David Hunter, Mon Valley NAACP president, said he received screenshots showing the flag\u00a0in clear view, wrapped around a microphone stand.\u00a0Hunter voiced his concerns at Tuesday\u2019s Charleroi council meeting. Mark Alterici,\u00a0Charleroi council president, apologized and stated he had not noticed the flag with so much going on.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In a statement,\u00a0Christine Mohamed, Executive Director for CAIR-Pittsburgh<\/span><\/b>\u00a0said<\/span><\/p>

\u201cWe join the NAACP in expressing concerns about the use of the Confederate flag during a public event. The display of this flag — a\u00a0symbol of hate\u00a0and oppression\u00a0— at a community\u00a0celebration sends a message in contradiction to the American values of freedom and equality for all.\u00a0We are glad for the\u00a0swift action of the Charleroi Council; however, we expect the council to be fully aware of who is representing their community and values during such events.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>
