Civil Rights Intern Return to Table of Contents

After receiving caseworker training, Civil Rights Intern(s) will be responsible for investigating complaints of discrimination from community members and conducting direct advocacy on their behalf under the supervision of the Director of Civil Rights.  Civil Rights interns will also assist the Director of Civil Rights in arranging and staffing complaint intake sessions and immigration information sessions at local mosques.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct intake interviews with complainants;
  • Create and maintain case files;
  • Analyze complaints for applicability to civil rights laws, policies and procedures;
  • Draft correspondence to complainants;
  • Draft advocacy letters to offending organizations;
  • Coordinate Complaint Intake Sessions and Immigration Information Sessions;
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the Director of Civil Rights.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent research and analytical skills;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point;
  • Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision;
  • Interests in civil and/or human rights issues.

Government Relations Intern Return to Table of Contents

Government Relations Intern(s) will be responsible for assisting the Executive Director in creating a “Voter Mobilization Program” to create a comprehensive campaign that provides the Greater Philadelphia Muslim community with civic education, voter registration, and GOTV efforts that can be used on a yearly basis for the primary and general elections.

Responsibilities:

  • Create educational presentations & handouts on federal, state and local government structures and elected offices;
  • Develop voter registration and Get-Out-The-Vote strategies for Muslim communities in Philadelphia, Delaware, Chester, Montgomery and Bucks Counties.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.

Outreach Intern Return to Table of Contents

Outreach Interns will assist the Executive Director in creating a “Muslim Youth Leadership Program” that is intended to prepare Muslim youth to proactively address critical issues facing the Muslim community in the fields of civil rights, public relations, civic participation and more.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and/or edit classes presentations, handouts and other learning material;
  • Identify and coordinate program’s logistical requirements;
  • Create and distribute program advertising and promotional material;
  • Receive, sort and manage participant applications;
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational and time management skills;
  • The ability to work well under pressure;
  • Good interpersonal, communication skills and a team player

Research Intern Return to Table of Contents

Research interns will be responsible for undertaking a semester long project on an assigned topic culminating in the creation of a class which will include: 1) a paper that will be used to educate class instructors and; 2) a power point presentation that will be given to class participants.

Sample Topics:

  • Minority Experiences in American History – Project(s) focusing on the civil rights/social justice issues faced by any of a number of other ethnic, religious and political minorities in American History.
  • Minorities in the American Media – Project(s) focusing on how other ethnic, religious and political minorities have been portrayed in American History.
  • Government – Project(s) focusing on how each of the levels of government are structured, the elected and appointed officials in each, their election cycles and making government work for citizens.
  • World Religious Traditions – Project(s) focusing on provided basic information on the beliefs, practices and rituals of various faith traditions
